Public Reasoning Towards Truth and Community Trust: Regulating Online Deliberative Spaces for Participatory AI and Data Governance

14 Oct 2022

On 14 October, CAIDG Research Associate Willow Wong presented at the Truth and Trust Online Conference 2022 held at Boston University, USA. The annual Conference for Truth and Trust Online is organised as a unique collaboration between practitioners, technologists, academics and platforms, to share, discuss, and collaborate on useful technical innovations and research in the space.

In this short presentation, Willow explored the role of public reasoning in activating participatory AI and data governance. Calling on AI practitioners and policymakers to diversify sources of knowledge featured in the AI governance agenda, Willow's presentation identifies the value of non-elite and vernacular forms of knowledge as revealing public sentiments of trust and distrust. Using community co-creation to rebuild shared trust highlights the motivation of participatory AI and data governance, which is to align emerging AI capabilities with social good.
