Data, AI Governance and Covid-19: Medium and Long-Term Perspectives for Asia

Date: Friday, 9th October 2020, 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm (Singapore Time)

In response to COVID-19, various IT/AI technologies such as tracking app, contact confirming app, and facial recognition systems that automatically recognize images of appropriate social distances and urge caution are being promoted. However, these technologies raise concern about the balance between public benefits and individual privacy, and whether such measures will lead to new discrimination and prejudice. The webinar invites presenters from four countries, China, South Korea, Singapore and Japan who contributed to a report released in September 2019, and it will focus on lessons learned from the responses to COVID-19 from each country and discuss the impact of COVID-19 in the context of the larger trend of data and AI ethics and governance discussions in recent years.

This report includes research outputs of some partners of the Microsoft-SMU Asian Dialogues on AI Governance, an initiative launched some months ago by the Centre for AI and Data Governance in collaboration with Microsoft.

The webinar is hosted by the AI Policy Initiative (Seoul National University), the Technology Governance Research Unit of the Institute for Future Initiatives  (The University of Tokyo), and the Centre for AI and Data Governance (Singapore Management University, Law School).
