Our Centre Director, Associate Professor Jason Grant Allen, delivered an insightful presentation during the "Artificial Intelligence Transforming Trade” workshop organised by the National Press Foundation .

During his presentation, Jason highlighted 4 key considerations concerning AI and international trade:

AI is revolutionizing international trade by breaking barriers in various areas, such as contract automation, data analytics, logistics, and supply chain optimization. AI's ability to combine with other technologies makes it a versatile tool in trade.

Data protection and data localization measures in some countries can hinder AI development and its role in trade. Good data is essential to train AI effectively, and efforts towards bilateral data sharing agreements can address these challenges.

There are concerns about doomsday predictions regarding job displacement due to AI. While certain industries like journalism, law, and manufacturing may be impacted, careful consideration is needed to balance the distribution of benefits and burdens between capital, labor, and governments.

AI has the potential to boost domestic productivity for countries, leading to the re-onshoring of services like call centers and increased impact on sectors like textile and automotive manufacturing. This ties into geopolitical fragmentation, the desire for self-sufficiency, and reduced reliance on complex international supply chains.
