25.09.2023 || SMU CAIDG - MINLAW Online Harms Symposium 2023

SMU CAIDG co-organised the Online Harms Symposium 2023 with the Ministry of Law, Singapore, from 25 to 27 September 2023.

Day 1 of the "Online Harms Symposium: Exploring New Solutions and Legal Remedies for a Safer Online World" kicked off with insightful discussions on deepfakes, cancel culture, and harassment, with an opening speech by Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam emphasising the need to expand laws to protect individuals from online harms.

Day 2 of the Online Harms Symposium delved into solutions for online harm victims, with insights from Ms Julie Inman Grant, the eSafety Commissioner of the Australian Government, highlighting the role of specialised regulatory agencies in swiftly protecting victims. The event also shed light on the harm inflicted by cancel campaigns and underscored the need for legal recognition of emerging forms of harm. We look forward to continuing this vital discussion on online harms tomorrow.

Day 3 of the Online Harms Symposium focused on strategies for addressing online anonymity, including traceability for accountability and the need for legislation to protect individuals from online harm and facilitate victim redress. Online anonymity is a double-edged sword, offering freedom of expression but also enabling the spread of harmful content and hate. Thus, collective efforts are pivotal to constructing a safer online world.
