18.11.21 || Trustworthy Governance in a Pandemic

Our Director Prof Mark Findlay and Research Associate Li Min were part of a panel "Trustworthy Governance in a Pandemic" organised by Information Law and Policy Centre, presenting our Centre's work on pandemic surveillance societies and discussing the ramifications as we move into the 'new normal'.

Key points:

- The public’s trust has an impact on the efficacy and utility of COVID controls

- AI needs to be located within the community to generate trust within the community

- Community distrust would bleed into suspicions or doubts concerning the state’s role in wider surveillance and mass data sharing

- Resolving community disquiet and restoring trust would lead to positive outcomes through engaged citizenry and accountable data use by the authorities
