During the event, Prof Chesterman presented on the regulation of Artificial Intelligence and highlighted that the way we live, work, and play is increasingly dependent on AI systems that operate with diminishing human intervention. He also discussed how these fast, autonomous, and opaque machines offer great benefits as well as pose significant risks. He explored how our laws are dealing with AI, as well as what additional rules and institutions are needed – including the role that AI might play in regulating itself.
Followed by a panel discussion moderated by our centre director, Prof Mark Findlay, the panelists - Asst. Prof Harold Soh (NUS) and Ms. Willow Wong (Research Associate, CAIDG) engaged the audience with a lively discussion and touched on the themes of the challenges of regulating AI, the role and limits of the law, and ways that the wider public can contribute to regulatory efforts.
