CAIDG hosted an internal research seminar by YPHSL visiting professor, Prof Roee Sarel (Institute of Law and Economics - University of Hamburg) on 8 March.
The lecture builds on Prof Sarel's recent works on the law and economics of AI, published in the UC Law Journal and forthcoming in the Arizona State Law Journal. He shared insights on the law and economics of ChatGPT and generative AI, exploring key considerations in AI governance, including market failures, regulatory mechanisms, and liability regimes, through the lens of law and economics principles.
Generative AI has rapidly advanced in recent years, enabling the swift creation of diverse media types at the click of a button. While this new technology holds great promise, it also gives rise to major risks and concerns. During the seminar, Prof Sarel scrutinized recent European Union proposals for AI regulation and highlighted discrepancies between the proposed regulatory strategies and fundamental economic tenets. He proceeded to dissect the ethical dimensions of using Generative AI in legal writing. By examining the divergence in publishing guidelines across major publishers, this seminar underscores the need for cohesive AI policies within legal academia.
This seminar provided a holistic understanding of the intricate interplay between law, economics, and AI in contemporary discourse. We thank Prof Sarel for sharing his invaluable insights with us and offering a roadmap for advancing responsible AI governance and fostering innovation in the legal domain by elucidating the challenges and opportunities inherent in ChatGPT and generative AI.
